My Lifelong Struggle With Proofreading.
Am I the Only One Struggling to Get it Right?
I get very bored and exhausted checking out every comma, dot, and dash every time I want to publish, it sucks.
I won’t lie it’s a hell of a work for me to review my writing for errors and corrections, and sometimes I can’t help but wonder if I’m alone in this sort of laziness.
Am I?
Proofreading – the necessary evil of writing.
I’m not saying it’s not important, no, but it doesn’t make it any less stressful and boring for me.
It's like searching for needles in a pile of dried grass or legumes.
The only difference here is that the needles are typos, and the dried legumes are your laziness.
Why I Struggle With Proofreading?
I can't even tell why I hate the dam thing so much.
Thinking about it makes me sick because it’s too tedious, and I guess that’d be the reason number one why I struggle with it.
I can brainstorm to come up with new and innovative ideas for my article and settle down to finally write but taking almost half of that time just to check for mistakes can be mind-numbingly dull for me.
Proofreading consumes a lot of time I would rather spend time creating than reviewing.
Above all, I hate it because It's frustrating and it's crazy how one tiny error can ruin an otherwise perfect piece.
But here’s what I want you to know about proofreading: it isn’t just about finding mistakes or some sort of error; it’s about refining your ideas so that you will make your message clear and show your writing prowess too.
Think of it as a way of polishing all the precious and inspiring ideas you’ve got in your piece of writing– it’s worth the effort at the end.
Tips to Make Proofreading Less Stressful:
Most times what I do is take a break by stepping away from my writing for a little while, then come back with a more relaxed mind and fresh eyes.
I read aloud sometimes, imagining myself to be a reader of my work to catch errors and awkward phrasing.
You can use tools such as Grammarly, Hemingway Editor, or Ginger to help you with your editing, but remember to still check with your human eyes.
Alternatively, you can hire an editor or, better still, get help from a friend or colleague, and ask them to help you review.
One thing about proofreading is that it’s an essential step in the writing process, and you don’t have to be necessarily perfect; you just have to care about your work and your readers.
So, that is it, guys, how I struggle with proofreading day in and day out, and if you ever find yourself stuck in this position too, just take a walk around and a deep breath, grab a snack or two or three, and go into the proofreading session it’s an essential part of your writing.
Please share in the comment section below how you handle your proofreading.
Thanks!
